We’ve recently been treated to a new expansion pack: The Sims 4 Life and death. In the interest of transparency, I haven’t played with the pack myself, and don’t plan on buying it any time soon. However, I watched Whiny Brit’s playthrough of the pack – if you’d like to watch it for yourself I’ll link the first episode here – and wanted to share my thoughts on the pack from what I could see.
The Good
There were plenty of features in this pack that I enjoyed. For one, I think it’s clear that a lot of care has gone into creating the lore and worldbuilding. For example, Olive Specter returns to the game in this pack, a decision which I’m sure excited many simmers as it did me. Olive’s character and backstory were a perfect fit for this pack.
I think that the reaper career is so fun, it adds a little bit of that silliness that the Sims series is known for while still being on theme. It’s nice to have an active career as well – I’ll be the first to admit they can become tedious after a while but it makes the pack feel that little bit more fleshed out. Plus getting to hang out with the Grim Reaper.
This is a bit more of a small feature, but one I was really happy to see – Sims can explore catacombs! This looks to be a returning feature from the Sims 3, funcationing similarly to the mausoleum. This was exciting for me personally because I loved exploring the mausoleums in the Sims 3, I remeber my sim alwayws coming out completely singed! I love the nods to older games we’ve been getting recently.
The Bad
Although the pack does look fun to play with, I do also have some concerns. I think this is becoming more of a common complaint with packs these days, but I feel that a lot of this content didn’t really need its own pack. One feature I feel this way about is playable ghosts and the ghost skill tree. This is one of the big features of this pack, but didn’t we already have a pack based around ghosts and spirits; the Paranormal Stuff pack? Why not make it a game pack and include the expanded ghosts there? The will and heirlooms are also something I don’t feel necessarily needed to be here, but I think this would’ve been a fantastic addition to a more family – focused pack. If I’m being totally honest, I feel that the features in this pack don’t really add up to a full expansion pack, especially considering that ghosts were in the base game already. I’m not sure this pack is really worth the price.
But of course, this is just my opinion! I haven’t really played with the pack myself so maybe if I had, I would feel differently! These are just my thoughts from watching the gameplay. As always, feel free to leave your own thoughts in the comments!
Until next time 🙂
